Frequently Asked Questions

What questions will NetRule answer?
NetRule provides extensive analytical results that let you answer the following types of questions:

Is NetRule Easy to learn?
Network engineers can learn to use NetRule with 8 hours or less of training.  This is because NetRule has been designed to require only data that a network engineer would be familiar with, and to hide the details of the mathematical analysis.

How do I use NetRule?
NetRule lets you create or open network models and libraries, edit them graphically, and evaluate their performance. For a detailed walkthrough on how to use the tool, please read our paper about using NetRule.

Which libraries does NetRule support?
Please look at the link protocols and transport protocols in the NetRule specifications.

How do you know if NetRule results are correct?
Many customers have directly compared results from NetRule with those from spreadsheets, simulation tools, and their actual network data.  In each case, NetRule results have shown accuracy comparable to other techniques.

Can I import my existing network into NetRule?
The techniques are discussed in a data import white paper. Surprisingly, automatic equipment discovery and traffic monitoring are not foremost among them.

How fast is NetRule?
Very fast.  NetRule evaluation times rarely exceed 10 seconds, even for very large networks.

Rapid evaluation lets you explore many alternatives and complete analyses in a fraction of the time required for spreadsheet of simulation studies. The ability to evaluate many more alternatives is a very significant benefit.

Is NetRule Scalable?
NetRule uses analytical techniques that require no additional time or memory to replicate computers or generate messages, and only linear amounts of time and memory for other components. As a result, NetRule scales effortlessly to any size network, including those with tens of thousands of users.

Does NetRule have significant hardware or memory requirements?
In a world of bloatware, NetRule is remarkably compact and efficient. It requires less than 30 MB of disk space, including Java, and it runs well with 128 MB of RAM for mid-size models.

Can NetRule be used as a sales tool?
NetRule can be used by server, switch, router and software sales groups. It is especially useful in supporting the purchase and roll-out of software applications. Sales people gain credibility by documenting proposed solutions, and customers appreciate the organization, information, and quality assurance predictive modeling can provide. This is ahighly professional and competent approach in providing excellent sales support.

What operating system does NetRule run on?
NetRule is written 100% in Java and will run on all 33 major platforms for which there is a JVM. This includes Windows 95/98/NT, XP, 2000, etc., and all the major Unix platforms, and Macintosh.
